Author Topic: Thoughts about the Links section  (Read 3604 times)

Well, now that the new site is starting to take shape, ahead of schedule (when the AGM minutes come out, you'll see that just a basic home page with the membership info was promised by Tuesday 12 13 February) and the 2007 OOD Class Rules are ready (pending final approval from the Rules Secretary) to upload, my thoughts are turning towards the Links section. So I'm about to make some suggestions about what I currently have in mind here, but perhaps we could also have some feedback on the kind of links *you'd* like to see...

  • Separate pages for Impala links, 'kindred' classes (Sonata, Quarter & Half-Tonners etc.), racing/rating info (ISAF, ORC, RYA, RORC Rating), possibly 'Impala friendly' clubs & regattas, services/suppliers etc. and anything else (you tell me!) of interest?
  • Reciprocal link requested/required for featured Impala sites (no, I'm not suggesting 'link exchanges' with anyone else, but IMHO it's fair enough in this case)?
  • Short descriptions of each link (with thumbnail images where appropriate) so that it's all more interesting/inviting than just another 'list'?

Now, there's surely plenty I haven't even thought of there, so over to you? (Not that it's all going to happen instantly, but let's get some discussion going so I'm not just dreaming in a vacuum!)

Thanks
P

New website looks good!

Links ideas sound good too.

Folks, it's been a year and substantial areas of the site framework still remain short of content! So I've just posted a reciprocal link from our empty links page to this topic, and am appealing for some help to get this one moving.

Thanks

Separate pages for Impala links
The following sites (from my 'personal' Impala links) all appear to be defunct?

Current Impala sites?
  • Curved Air
    http://www.curvedair.co.uk/
Can we have a link back, suitable image and some blurb, please?
  • Fly
    http://www.petestack.com/sailing/
After previous spells on the Avon and Forth, Fly has been based on the West Coast of Scotland under the ownership of current Association Secretary Peter Duggan since late 1998. Her webpages include accounts of her conversion to inboard engine, a wild Clyde delivery trip in 2002 and victory in the Scottish Two-Handed Race the following year.
  • Reaction
    http://www.reactioninaction.com/
Can we have a link back, suitable image and some blurb, please?
  • Uproar
    http://www.gbr9561.com/
Can you update your link backs (old URLs) and give us a suitable image and some blurb, please?

'kindred' classes (Sonata, Quarter & Half-Tonners etc.)
Appropriate insignia/logo to the left of each entry here?
  • Sonata
    http://www.sonata.org.uk/
From the same designer and builder as the Impala, the smaller and slightly older National Sonata is perhaps the best-loved of all the David Thomas one-designs and still musters substantial fleets for class racing.
  • Quarter-Tonners
    http://www.quartertonclass.org/
While the Impala and Sonata were the first UK yachts to be awarded standard IOR ratings, their level-rating Quarter and Half-Tonner cousins are now both enjoying class revivals with IRC to level the playing field between different vintages of IOR design.
  • Half-Tonners
    http://www.halftonclass-europe.net/
    See Quarter-Tonners above.
  • British Hunter Association
    http://www.hunterassociation.org.uk/
Just discovered this one (former Hunter 27 OOD Class Association now open to all Hunter classes) today (2008-02-11), and think we should link to it. Noted link back to our old domain and have already sent them a message about that! ;-)
  • Sigma 33?
    http://www.sigma33.org.uk/
    Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet.
  • Laser 28?
    http://www.laser28.org/
Think this could be relevant and interesting link, but not without some light-hearted allusion to this home page blurb?
"Racer/Cruiser" - is a worn-out cliché. You can race anything that floats. But, if you want the feel of performance instead of driving a truck, you can knock out 95% of the 28 ft. market. If (heaven forbid!) you also wanted to stand up below and do more than race around the bouys, there go all the rest - but one, the Bruce Farr designed Laser 28.

racing/rating info (ISAF, ORC, RYA, RORC Rating)
Appropriate insignia/logo to the left of each entry here?
  • International Sailing Federation (ISAF)
    http://www.sailing.org/
Founded in 1907 and known until 1996 as the International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU), the ISAF is the recognised worldwide governing body for sailing, and source of such essential documents as the Racing Rules of Sailing and Offshore Special Regulations.
  • Offshore Racing Congress (ORC)
    http://www.orc.org/
    (Not really relevant after all?)
  • Royal Yachting Association (RYA)
    http://www.rya.org.uk/
Founded in 1875 and known until 1953 as the Yacht Racing Association (YRA), the RYA is the recognised UK body for recreational and competitive boating, and responsible as such for everything from professional qualifications to the Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme.
  • Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC)
    http://www.rorc.org/
Founded in 1925 and assuming its present (Royal) title in 1931, the RORC is responsible for events such as the Fastnet Race and (perhaps more relevant to the Impala sailor) a Rating Office administering the IRC Rule.
  • Clyde Yacht Clubs' Association (CYCA)
    http://www.cyca-online.org.uk/
Founded as the Clyde Yacht Clubs' Conference in 1898 and reconstituted under its current name in 1932, the CYCA's remit overlaps with those of the RYA and RYA Scotland (with which it liaises closely) and includes the issue of nationally-recognised 'C' sail numbers and the administration of the widely-used CYCA Handicap scheme.
  • ECHO/ISCRS/other handicapping (anyone racing under these?)

possibly 'Impala friendly' clubs & regattas
Not sure what category these should go under, but are the likes of JOG and EAORA still attractive to Impalas? Is the SE of England (Royal Temple etc.) still mustering good fleets and how about the Hong Kong connection?

Quote
services/suppliers etc.
What's providing a genuine service to members (eg listing known Mark 2 rudder builders?) and what's just advertising? Do we include sailmakers, and what selection criteria should we consider if we do?

and anything else (you tell me!) of interest?
